The Healing Power of Thoughts: 5 Ways to Create a Healing Mindset
If you follow any self-help or life coaching guru, you are bound to hear the idea that your thoughts create your future. This is true for every aspect of life, including health and well-being. What you focus on expands. Energy flows where attention goes. Henry Ford said:
“Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”
I am not suggesting that you can heal from any illness with the power of your thoughts, but I do know that your thoughts are powerful. Cognitive behavioral therapy touts the power of thoughts in creating outcomes in life. The basic pathway is: thoughts create feelings, feelings create actions or inactions, and those actions or inactions create outcomes or circumstances.
By controlling our thoughts, we have the power to change outcomes. That’s powerful stuff!
I noticed a big improvement in my rheumatoid arthritis symptoms once I began working on the healing power of thoughts. I began changing my thoughts from being about how much I hurt to thoughts about healing. I changed from a hurting mindset to a healing mindset, and my healing went to the next level.
It’s well known that placebos in drug trials elicit a healing response 30-50% of the time. We also know that hypnosis is very successful in treating some medical conditions including pain relief. So, thoughts in the brain create a physical, biological response.
Why does this work?
Thoughts are actually energy. Brain activity can be measured, even without touching the body. Every cell in our body responds to energy.
In his book The Biology of Belief, Dr. Bruce Lipton states:
Hundreds upon hundreds of scientific studies over the last fifty years have consistently revealed that “invisible” forces of the electromagnetic spectrum profoundly impact every facet of biological regulation.
The genetic expression of our cells can literally turn on or turn off in response to the energy of our thoughts. If we have negative thoughts, we send the message to our cells that things are not going well. Positive thoughts can actually elicit a healing response. That’s the healing power of thoughts!
Changing your thoughts to create a healing response is totally free and makes you feel better as well. What’s not to lose?
Here are 5 ways to create a healing mindset:
-
Journaling: Imagine yourself fully healed and write about a day in the life of healthy you.
-
Visualization: Close your eyes and picture yourself as fully healed. What are you doing? Picture it in full detail and try to involve all your senses.
-
Meditation: Listen to a guided meditation focused on healing.
-
Practice gratitude: First thing in the morning and last thing before going to sleep think of three things you are grateful for today.
-
Affirmations: Recite positive healing affirmations, really feeling the words and state them in the present tense ( I am ….).
Admittedly, it’s not easy to feel positive when you are feeling miserable, but you WILL feel better when you create a positive healing mindset.
