Your Secret Agent: The Subconscious Mind
Did you know you have a secret agent who’s always at work and never sleeps?
This secret agent always receives and processes information on your behalf and decides what to do with that information.
Who is this secret agent?
It’s the subconscious mind!
The subconscious mind runs the physical body through the autonomic nervous system. Like a computer, the subconscious mind receives inputs from the outside environment via the conscious mind. Repeated inputs eventually create patterns; patterns of behaviour and patterns of operating the body.
Most of the time, up to 95% of the time, the secret agent is operating from those repeating patterns or programs.
If our life right now isn’t what we want, including chronic physical conditions like pain, then we need to change the information we are giving our secret agent.
We want our secret agent to be working FOR us not against us.
The big question is HOW? How do we change the inputs?
A great starting point is to pay attention to what’s going on in your conscious mind, because that’s where the secret agent (the subconscious mind) gets its information.
What are you thinking about right now? If you have negative thoughts, try shifting your focus.
Are you feeling anxious?
Breathe slowly and deeply into the belly with long, slow exhales. Try to focus on the breath, the feelings, and the sounds of the breath moving in your body.
Are you worried?
Focus on something, anything, that you can feel grateful for right in this moment. For example, your eyesight, your beating heart, or the air you breathe.
Are you feeling irritated?
Notice where you are feeling that irritation in your body, then squeeze the area and imagine breathing into it. Do this until you feel the area release.
Are you feeling physical pain?
Try being a neutral observer of the pain, noticing the sensations as if you were a third party watching the pain. Remind yourself that even though you are experiencing pain, you are safe.
These are just some ways you can switch to more neutral thoughts. In this way, the ‘secret agent’ gets the message that it can send signals of safety to the body.
A body that feels safe is one that can heal.
Try one or more of these and let me know in the comments if it’s helped you in any way. 💗
